A facelift, when performed at Marcus Medical, lifts certain natural tissues underlying the skin, called the SMAS. This is the deep layer of tissue that covers the muscles in the lower face and neck. Over time, the SMAS loses some of its resiliency, leading to facial sagging. A perfectly executed facelift procedure elevates the SMAS layer, restoring cheeks, jawline definition, smoothing lines and creases, and smoothing away sagging neck skin and tissue.

A facelift treats the mid to lower face. For a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation, you may choose to undergo a combination of a facelift, eyelid surgery, and brow lift.

A facelift doesn’t restore lost volume at the temples, or hollow cheeks. However, by lifting the SMAS layer and removing excess skin, the deeper folds from nose to mouth are smoothed, creating a lifting effect that creates a plumper, rounder look to the cheek area. In cases where additional fullness is needed, natural fat transfer or filler injections could be performed.

A facelift restores a more youthful look to your facial structure by repositioning the underlying tissue and meticulously removing excess skin and fat. You may choose to undergo a chemical peel as an added procedure to rejuvenate skin quality, and create evenly toned, glowing skin.

Facelift recovery generally takes about two weeks before you are ready to reveal your refreshed look. Initially there will be swelling and bruising which will start to diminish within about one week. If you have an important function such as a wedding, plan your procedure at least six weeks in advance.

Dr. Marcus prefers to have his facelift patients spend the first night in an aftercare facility where they will receive personalized care. After that, you can return home with full aftercare instructions.

If you work, you can return to non-strenuous duties within two weeks after surgery. If your work is physically demanding, you will need more time to ensure your incisions have time to heal. Exercise, other than normal walking, should be postponed until Dr. Marcus advises you it is safe to do so.

Anytime there is an incision, there will be a scar. Dr. Marcus is very precise in planning the incision sites to ensure scars will heal to virtual invisibility and that they are placed in areas where there is a natural fold.

Every person heals differently, but facelift scars should not be noticeable once healed. It is vital that patients follow all aftercare instructions and take all the time they need to recover. Use your healing time to eat healthy foods, stay hydrated, and rest.

Facelift recovery occurs in stages. When fully healed, the incision site will be a fine white line, virtually invisible.
